6th Grade Science: Unit 8 - Natural Resources

QuestionAnswer
What are natural resources? Any natural material used by humans.
What are two different types of natural resources? Renewable and non-renewable.
What are the 3 examples of natural resources? Water, oil and wood.
Name 3 things that are not natural resources commuters, pictures, and animals
List 3 examples of renewable resources sun, wind, water
What is a hydroelectric power? Flowing water creates energy that can be captured and turned into electricity/ Renewable
Where would hydroelectric power be more practical? near a water source
Define: Renewable Can be replaced in a short amount of time
Define: Biomass organic material that comes from plants and animals
Define Non-renewable resources natural substances that cannot be readily replaced by natural means at a pace quick enough to keep up with consumption
Why are natural resources important? They support the survival of all living organisms.
Why are some resources nonrenewable? They come from materials that form extremely slowly, such as fossil fuels made from ancient plant and animal remains.
Are fossil fuels renewable or non-renewable resources? non-renewable
How are fossil fuels formed? They are born through geologic process acting on the remains of organic matter.
Provide 3 examples of fossil fuels – coal, oil, and natural gas.
Describe 3 ways fossil fuels are used in the United States. Electricity production, fuel for heating and transportation, and cooking.
Why is it better to use solar energy than fossil fuels? less pollution and more efficiency.
Describe the 3 steps to coal formation. 1) Accumulation of plant matter in swampy wetlands 2) Burial and composition of the plant matter 3) Heating and transportation into coal.
Is coal a renewable or non-renewable resource? Why? Non-renewable because it takes millions of years to form
What is the protection and wise use of natural resources? Conservation.
What is the careful and responsible management of resources? Stewardship
Give two examples of conservation Conserving water and conservation of energy.
Give two examples of being a good steward Take care of what you have and use your resources wisely.
What do people do to harm our waters? Litter and put fertilizer in the water.
What are three ways to reduce water usage? Repair leaky faucets. Don’t use garbage disposal. Don’t take long showers
What are two things that we can do to make sure that our water is safe to drink? avoid using suspected or contaminated water and lean how water utilities remove harmful germs and chemicals from water
What do people rely on land for? People rely on land for food, housing, natural resources, economic activity, culture and social purposes, biodiversity and ecosystem support.
Define: Preservation the action of preserving something
How do we preserve our land from being damaged or changed (locally, state, or nationally)? By preventing litter and waste.
Describe what reforestation is. Practice of restoring or previously existing forests and Woodlands that have been destroyed or damaged.
What is reclamation? The attempt to make land suitable for something
Provide an example of reclamation? Environmental reclamation, where damaged land is restored to a healthier state.
How can we reduce urban sprawl? Creating compact, connected, and innovative urban areas
What are some benefits of recycling? It makes it so we can reduce the things we use, and so nature isn't damaged.
What mineral is mined that is used to smelt aluminum that we can recycle? Bauxite
Recycling is a way that humans can reduce the impact using what for energy? Diverting waste from landfills and reusing materials
What solid fossil fuel is formed underground from partially decomposed plant material? coal
Cost is a disadvantage to what type of resources? this a non-renewable resource?
Corn makes what kind of alcohol? ethanol - additive to gasoline
What is global warming? Long-term heating of Earth’s surface
What are smog and global warming caused by? pollution
List the greenhouse gases. carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), water vapor (H2O), and ozone (O3)
