What is the scientific name for the chest cavity? The thoracic cavity.
What is the scientific name for the "voice box?" The larynx.
Where is the Epiglottis located? and What is the purpose of the epiglottis? The epiglottis is a flap that covers the top of the larynx. The epiglottis prevents food/water from entering the larynx upon swallowing.
What is the sound difference between having thick vs thin vocal cords/folds? Thin vocal chords: high pitched sounds. Thick vocal chords: low, deep-pitched sounds.
What is the scientific name for the windpipe? The trachea.
What is the purpose of the ribcage? The ribcage protects the heart and lungs while also housing the "breathing muscles."
Where are intercostal muscles located? Inter=between Cost=rib The intercostal muscles are located between the ribs.
What happens when the intercostal muscles contract? When the intercostal muscles contract, they expand the thoracic cavity, increasing lung volume - allowing us to inhale.
What happens when the intercostal muscles relax? When the intercostal muscles relax, they deflate the thoracic cavity, decreasing lung volume - causing us to exhale.
Where is the heart located in relation to the lungs? The heart is located between the left and right lung.
Where is the diaphragm located in relation to the lungs? The diaphragm is attached to the inferior (lower) side of the lungs.
What happens when the diaphragm contracts? When the diaphragm contracts, it pulls down and increases lung volume, allowing us to inhale.
What happens when the diaphragm relaxes? When the diaphragm relaxes, it moves up decreasing the lung volume, causing us to exhale.
Human right lungs have how many lobes? 3
Human left lungs have how many lobes? 2
Why is the human left lung smaller than the human right lung? The human right lung is smaller than the human left lung in order to accommodate (make room for) the heart.
