resource conservation and recovery act (RCRA) "cradle to grave" act that gives the EPA the power to control any hazardous/toxic waste at any stage. the EPA maintains lists of hazardous wastes and works with authorities to minimize waste generation + makes sure the waste is tracked til proper disposal
comprehensive environmental response, compensation, +liability act (CERCLA) the 1980 "Superfund" act funds the cleanup of abandoned toxic waste sites. it also imposes taxes on chemical industries and allows the government to respond directly to the release of substances that pose as a threat to human health
clean air act the act points out the six criteria air pollutants that are harmful to human health and the environment
clean water act the act supports the protection and propagation of fish, shellfish, wildlife, and recreation in and on the water. it issued water quality standards that defined acceptable limits on the various pollutants in US waterways
convention on international trade in endangered species of wild fauna and flora (CITES) the 1972 act was used to monitor the international trade of threatened plants and animals (it maintains a list of threatened species known as the "Red List"
endangered species act the act was designed to protect species from extinction. it allowed the US law to identify endangered, threatened, and vulnerable species. it also places restrictions and regulations
montreal protocol an international treaty designed to eliminate production and consumption of ozone depleting substances (ODS) like CFCs. it was very effective as the hole in the ozone layer decreased substantially
kyoto protocol it operationalized the UN framework convention on climate change by committing industrialized countries and economies in transition to limit + reduce greenhouse gas emissions. the US opted out of it
delaney clause of food, drug, and cosmetics act it ruled that no cancer-causing agents (carcinogens) shall be deliberately added to food or drink
