Resources/Pollution

TermDefinition
Nonrenewable resources resources that exist in a limited amount and cannot be replaced or replenished as quickly as it’s used; include fossil fuels and nuclear energy
Fossil fuels energy-rich resources made from the preserved remains of organisms
Nuclear fission the splitting of an atom’s nucleus to release a great deal of energy
Renewable resources resources that are always available or are naturally replaced in a relatively short time
Mineral a non-living solid substance made from a combination of elements
Point source a specific source of pollution that can be identified
Nonpoint source: a widely spread source of pollution that is difficult to link to a specific point of origin
Birth rate the number of births per 1000 individuals for a certain time period.
Death rate the number of deaths per 1000 individuals for a certain time period.
Exponential growth a rate of change that increases more and more rapidly over time
Overpopulation When the number of humans grows beyond the available resources
Conservation The practice of using fewer resources so that they can last longer
Sustainable use the practice of using resources in such a way that they will continue to be available in the future.
Agriculture using land to produce food
Desertification the advance of desert-like conditions into areas that were previously fertile; caused by over farming
Deforestation the removal of forests/trees to use the land for other reasons.
Fracking a process used to extract oil and natural gas from deep underground shale rock formation
Emissions pollutants that are pumped out of man-made structures/objects into the air
Acid rain formed by the release of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides from burning fossil fuels, which mix with water to make acids
Smog forms when pollutants react with sunlight, forming a thick, brownish haze that hovers over a city
Ozone layer a layer of ozone that acts as a shield to protect living things from too much ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun
