Geology Part 2
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Mineral | A solid, crystal structure that forms in nature, is inorganic (not living) and has a definite chemical makeup. |
| Hardness | The resistance of a mineral to being scratched. The Mohs hardness scale is used to classify minerals from 1(softest) to 10 (hardest). A very reliable way to identify a mineral** |
| Luster | The way light is reflected off of the minerals surface. Metallic - looks like metal (shiny) Nonmetallic - dull, does not look like meta |
| Streak | The color of powder left behind when a mineral is rubbed on a surface. |
| Texture | A mineral's feel, appearance, or consistancy. |
| Chemical Properties | A mineral’s ability to react with an acid. Minerals with calcium carbonate react to the acid test. |
| Igneous Rock | Created by lava or magma cooling. Intrusive - formed inside of Earth by magma cooling. Has large crystals and a course/rough texture Extrusive - formed outside of Earth when lava cools. Has smaller crystals and a smooth texture. |
| Sedimentary Rock | Type of rock that contains smaller rock particles, sand, and fossils pressed together over time. |
| Metamorphic Rock | Type of rock formed due to heat and pressure. Formed when tectonic plates collide |
| Weathering | The breaking down of rock into smaller pieces or sediment. |
| ErosionErosion | The movement of a rock to another location. |
