TermDefinition
Mineral A solid, crystal structure that forms in nature, is inorganic (not living) and has a definite chemical makeup.
Hardness The resistance of a mineral to being scratched. The Mohs hardness scale is used to classify minerals from 1(softest) to 10 (hardest). A very reliable way to identify a mineral**
Luster The way light is reflected off of the minerals surface. Metallic - looks like metal (shiny) Nonmetallic - dull, does not look like meta
Streak The color of powder left behind when a mineral is rubbed on a surface.
Texture A mineral's feel, appearance, or consistancy.
Chemical Properties A mineral’s ability to react with an acid. Minerals with calcium carbonate react to the acid test.
Igneous Rock Created by lava or magma cooling. Intrusive - formed inside of Earth by magma cooling. Has large crystals and a course/rough texture Extrusive - formed outside of Earth when lava cools. Has smaller crystals and a smooth texture.
Sedimentary Rock Type of rock that contains smaller rock particles, sand, and fossils pressed together over time.
Metamorphic Rock Type of rock formed due to heat and pressure. Formed when tectonic plates collide
Weathering The breaking down of rock into smaller pieces or sediment.
ErosionErosion The movement of a rock to another location.
