landforms physical features on the Earth's surface
weathering the process of breaking down rock, sand, clay, and sediments
erosion the process of moving sediment from one place to another
deposition the process of dropping, or depositing, dediments in a new location
mass movement the downhill movement of rock and soil because of gravity
crust the outer layer of the Earth that is made of rock and is very thin
mantle the layer beneath the crust
core the center of the earth and is made of two parts; inner core and outer core
plate rigid blocks of crust and upper mantle rock
magma is mosten rock from the Earth's mantle
volcano a mountain formed by lava and ash
earthquake a shaking of the ground caused by the sudden release of energy in the Earth's crust
fault places where pieces of crust move
continental drift the theory of how Earth's continents move over its surface
Pangea theory that 225 million years ago all of the land on Earth was joined together in a "supercontinent"
epicenter the point of the Earth's surface directly above an earthquake
contour plowing following the lines of uneven terrain to limit erosion of topsoil
windbreak hedge, fence or row of trees serving to lessen or break the force of the wind
seismograph instrument Scientists use to measure and record seismic waves
seismic waves energy sent out during an earthquake
Richter Scale an instrument with a scale ranging from 1 to 10, used to measure the total energy release by an earthquake
tsunami a very large wave caused by an under water earthquake or volcanic eruption
lava molten rock that reaches the Earth's surface
delta a deposit of sediments at the mouth of a river
sand dunes a hill or ridge of wind blown sand
flood control the regulating of water entering a certain area of land
dam a barrier built across a waterway to control the flow or raise the level of water
levees an embankment built to prevent a river from over flowing or any water from entering a certain area of land
beach reclamation a technological method of restoring the natural sand back to the beach
terrace a raised bank of earth having sloping sides and a flat top
lime sinks sudden sinking of soil that is on top of a lime stone
Plate tectonics a theory that the sectioned plates move over the earth's crust causing volcanic eruptions, thus causing continental drift and changing the shape and size of the ocean as well as the continets
