Nervous System
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Nervous System | A network of specialized cells and organs that allows us to receive information from our environment, process that information, and respond to it |
| Central Nervous System (CNS) | Takes in information from all the senses, process that information, and sends out signals to tell us how to respond; Includes the brain and spinal cord |
| Peripheral Nervous System (PNS) | Network of communication lines that branch out from the command center (brain) to every other part of the body; Includes nerves, transmitters, and neurons |
| Spine | A column of small bones called vertebrae; Provides support, protection, and movement |
| Cerebrum | Largest part of the brain and includes the frontal, parietal, temporal, and occipital lobes; It's where we store memories and learn new things, understand what we see, hear, and feel, and allows us to do things on purpose |
| Frontal Lobe | Control center of the brain located right behind the forehead; Helps us think, plan, and make choices |
| Parietal Lobe | We have two parietal lobes that act as a sensory processing information center; Helps us process our senses, spatial awareness, sensory integration, and language/math skills |
| Temporal Lobe | Listening and memory "neighborhoods" located on the sides of your head, near your ears; Help us understand and process sounds and remembering both short and long term memories |
| Occipital Lobe | Located at the back of the brain, this lobe helps us process information through eyesight; Helps us recognize objects and faces, colors, movement, and judging distances and depths |
| Cerebral Cortex | Covers the cerebrum and is made up of billions of nerve cells responsible for our higher-level brain functions; It is the control center for thinking and reasoning, memory, language, senses, movement, emotions and personality, and consciousness |
| Cerebellum | Acts as the brain's mini-brain to help keep things smooth and coordinated; Helps us with balance, coordination, and learned movements (muscle memory) |
| Brain Stem | Located at the very bottom of the brain, it acts as the brain's lifeline and controls automatic responses to help keep us alive; Breathing, heartbeat, blood pressure, swallowing, sleep-wake cycle |
