TermDefinition
Frontal lobe personality, decision-making, movement, recognition of smell, and speech ability.
Parietal lobe identify objects and understand spatial relationships (where one’s body is compared with objects around the person), interpreting pain and touch, understand spoken language.
Occipital lobe vision
Temporal lobe short-term memory, speech, musical rhythm and some degree of smell recognition
Cerebellum coordinate voluntary muscle movements and to maintain posture, balance and equilibrium
Postcentral gyrus somatosensory (sensory information)
Precentral gyrus motor control (controlling and directing voluntary/involuntary movement)
Basal Ganglia control of movements, learning, habit, cognition, and emotion
Thalamus regulation of sleep, consciousness, and alertness
Hippocampus memory and navigation
Amygdala memory, decision-making, and emotional responses
Hypothalamus controls body temperature, hunger, fatigue, and sleep
Corpus callosum allows the brain's hemispheres to communicate
Pituitary gland in charge of other gland functions in the body, regulating the flow of hormones from the thyroid, adrenal, ovaries and testicles
Superior colliculus visual attention, coordinating eye and head movements, and orienting behaviors
Reticular formation sleep, attention, movement, the maintenance of muscle tone, and various cardiac, circulatory and respiratory reflexes
Medulla controls involuntary functions that are essential for survival, including breathing, heart rate, and blood pressure
