Asteroid A small, rocky object that orbits the Sun, mostly found in space between Mars and Jupiter.
Asteroid Belt A big area in space between Mars and Jupiter where many asteroids are found.
Astronomical unit A unit of space distance that equals the space between Earth and the Sun.
Atmosphere The layer of gases around a planet that we breathe and that protects us.
Big Bang Theory The idea that the universe started from a tiny point and has been expanding ever since.
Coma The fuzzy cloud of gas and dust around the center of a comet.
Comet A space object made of ice, rock, and dust that grows a tail when it gets close to the Sun.
Elliptical Galaxy A galaxy shaped like a round or stretched-out ball with mostly old stars.
Elliptical orbit A path around something (like the Sun) that is shaped like an oval, not a circle.
Gaseous Planets Big planets made mostly of gas, like Jupiter and Saturn.
Galaxy A huge group of stars, gas, dust, and planets all held together by gravity.
Geocentric A model where Earth is in the center of the universe and everything moves around it.
Gravity A force that pulls things toward each other – like how we stay on the ground.
Heliocentric A model where the Sun is in the center of the solar system and the planets move around it.
Inertia The idea that things want to keep doing what they’re doing unless something changes it.
Irregular Galaxy A galaxy with no clear shape – it looks messy or uneven.
Kuiper Belt A region of space past Neptune filled with icy objects and dwarf planets.
Meteor A space rock that burns up in Earth’s atmosphere – also called a "shooting star."
Meteorite A meteor that survives falling through the atmosphere and lands on Earth.
Meteoroid A small rock or chunk of metal in space, smaller than an asteroid.
Milky Way The galaxy where our solar system lives – it’s shaped like a spiral.
Nucleus The solid center of a comet, made of ice, rock, and dust.
Oort Cloud A huge cloud of icy objects far beyond the planets – where comets come from.
Planet A large object in space that orbits a star and is round.
Satellite Something that orbits a planet – it can be natural like a moon or made by humans.
Solar System The Sun and everything that moves around it, like planets, moons, and comets.
Spiral Galaxy A galaxy that looks like a pinwheel with arms that spin out from the center.
Tail The bright, glowing part of a comet that points away from the Sun.
Terrestrial planets Small, rocky planets like Earth, Mars, Venus, and Mercury.
Universe Everything that exists – all the stars, planets, galaxies, and space itself.
