| setting | the place, time, mood, or atmosphere of a story or piece of writing |
| events | the actions that take place in a story or a piece of writing |
| cause | a person, thing or event that makes something happen |
| effect | a change that is a result or consequence of an action or other cause |
| story map | a graphic organizer that can be used to organize the details and events within a story |
| plot | the action, the sequence of events within a story |
| point of view | the perspective from which a story is told. These include first person, second person, third person limited, third person objective, and third person omniscient |
| facts | events in a story that can be proven from the text |
| compare | to write about or examine the similarities between two ( or more) items or actions. |
| contrast | to write about or examine the differences between two (or more) items or actions |
| contibute | to add to a piece of work, to enhance it or make it better |
| communicate | to discuss or evaluate with others |
| essay | a piece of writing that deals with a subject in a certain way, and expresses the writer's point of view |
| refer | to make a connection or fall back on a piece of work |
| support a claim | to use textual evidence to prove what the writer suggests is true |
| describe | to use textual evidence to write about a subject |
| drag and drop | to use computer tools to move a piece of text into an essay or answer to support what the writer, or reader, wants to say |
| moral | a lesson that a piece of literature is teaching |
| statement | a sentence that is either true or false |
| phrase/ fragment few | a group of words that support the writing, but is not a complete sentence |
| summarize | to write a few sentences and retell the major events of what has been read |
