Environmental exam 3

QuestionAnswer
What are the three most common GMO crops? soybeans, corn, and cotton
Why are fertilizers used and what problems do they cause? They replace nutrients to the soil that were stripped by growing crops. The problem caused by fertilizer is it increases the nutrients in waterway leading to more aquatic growth
Persistent pesticides long-lasting, they accumulate in the soil and in non-target organisms
Non-persistent pesticides short-lived/break down quickly, do not accumulate in the environment
Three pest control methods that do not use pesticides using natural predators, resistant crops, ployculture
Why are pesticides used in mechanized agriculture? - increases yield, pesticides kill pests that would've destroyed a crop -increased income, reduces amount of tilling and amount of yield
Point source comes from a single, easy to locate source
Nonpoint source hard to locate, diffused pollutant, may be from multiple sources
Withdrawal of water the amount of water taken from a source, may be returned after use
Consumption of water not returned to its source
How are industrial wastes disposed of and how has this changed in the past 25yrs? - through municipal sewage treatment - since 1972 water must be treated/cleaned before being returned to its source
Three major water services provided by metropolitan areas provide a water supply, wastewater collection/treatment, and stormwater collection/management
Hydrologic cycle the sun causes water to evaporate form Earth's surface, the water condenses in the atmosphere and falls to Earth as precipitation, then soaks into the soil or runs-off into waterways
Primary air pollutants carbon monoxide, volatile organic compounds, particulate matter, sulfur dioxide, and oxides of nitrogen
Two primary gases in the atmosphere nitrogen (78.1%) and oxygen (20.9%)
Why do buildings have poor air quality? lack of circulation, lead in paint, volatile organic compounds from cleaning products, carbon monoxide from cooking, and mold
Air pollutant sources vehicle engines, dust, burning of fossil fuels
Air pollutant effects lung damage
Lead industrial sources metal smelters, battery manufacturers, and lead paint
Effects of acid rain - kills forests, changes in soil composition so it cannot support plant life - organisms cannot reproduce and some organisms cannot form exoskeletons because of the lower pH
