How do plaque and tartar differ? Plaque: Sticky, colorless bacteria film on the teeth Tartar (calculus): Hardened, mineralized plaque that is brown or yellow
What is the connection between gingivitis and heart disease? Bacteria from gingivitis can enter the bloodstream, harming blood vessels
Describe heartburn and it's cause. Burning sensation caused by stomach acid back-flowing due to a weakened esophagus sphincter (valve)
What is an ulcer and why is it so painful? A sore that develops on the inner stomach lining when the protecting layer is damaged, causing pain to exposed inner stomach layers
What is the link between ulcers in relation to stress and spicy food? Stress and spicy food can worsen symptoms and delay healing. There is no direct relation
What characterizes gastroenteritis and what are some of its symptoms? Often characterized by inflammation of the stomach and intestines, leading to symptoms like diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, and abdominal cramps.
Which inflammatory bowel disease affects all layers of the digestive tract wall? Chron's disease
What causes constipation? Low fiber intake Low water intake High fat/processed food intake Certain medications Lack of physical activity
How are constipation and diarrhea related to other diseases? Constipation and diarrhea can be symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), diabetes, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and certain infections
Describe the causes, symptoms, and prognosis for hepatitis. Caused by viruses, alcohol, drugs, toxins, or autoimmune issues. Symptoms: fatigue, jaundice, and abdominal pain. Prognosis: some resolve, others chronic liver damage or failure.
What causes pancreatitis? gallstones, heavy alcohol use, medications, high calcium levels, infections, autoimmune disorders, and genetics
What is a gallstone? What effect does a gallstone have on the body? Hardened deposits of bile Can block bile flow leading to pain and inflammation
How does the removal of the gallbladder affect a person? Can cause digestive issues like bloating, diarrhea, or difficulty digesting fats
Cite some statistics to show the seriousness of digestive cancer. Stomach: 5th common cancer, 4th most cancer related deaths Esophageal: Approximately 17,500 new cases and 15,100 deaths occur annually Colon: 3rd common in men and 2nd leading deaths in women
How difficult is it to screen for cancer in the digestive system? It's hard to decipher healthy and cancerous stomach tissues
