chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) a synthetic chemical, released by human activity, that depletes ozone in the atmosphere
salvage logging removal of naturally fallen trees to recover timber to prevent cutting down living trees
Ecosystem based resource management an integrated approach that incorporates the entire ecosystem, including humans, into resource management decisions
Montreal Protocol international agreement adopted in 1987 to phase out different ozone depleting substances
Fossil Fuel a nonrenewable energy source formed from the remains of prehistoric lifeforms
Clean water act a US law passed in 1972 that regulates the release of pollutants into its water
Point-source pollution pollution with a single, identifiable source
monoculture the cultivation of a single crop in a given area
air pollution contamination of air, indoor or outdoor, by a chemical, physical, or biological agent
Primary air pollutant an air contaminant that is emitted directly from a source, such as a smokestack, car, powerplant, etc.
Prescribed burn an intentionally planned fire set by a land manager to improve the overall health of an ecosystem
Intercropping farming practice in which different crops are grown mixed together
Adaptive resource management an approach to ecosystem management that focuses on smaller areas within an ecosystem and how they change over time
Desertification degradation of land due to human activities and climate change; causes soil to become loose and dry with little to no nurtients
Secondary air pollutant an air contaminant that is formed via a chemical reaction in the atmosphere
Emission release of harmful greenhouse gasses by human activity
Soil degradation a decline in the physical, chemical, and biological quality of soil
Nonpoint source pollution pollution that comes from multiple sources that are difficult to identify
