native ads Advertisements that don’t look like ads but instead blend into the content around them.
digital marketing An umbrella term for marketing products interactively using newer media and usually, but not always, the internet.
conversion When a person on an e-commerce site takes action and moves from being a browser on the site to being a buyer.
pay-per-click ads An internet ad a company doesn’t pay anything for unless someone actually clicks on it.
virtual reality (VR) The use of computer-generated images to immerse people in a digital environment, often with the use of a head-mounted display.
viral When a message spreads rapidly (like a computer virus).
landing page A web page that appears after a person clicks on a search engine result or an online ad.
social media marketing (SMM) The process of using social networking websites to engage potential customers and market and sell products to them.
multivariate testing A test in which multiple variables, or elements, are tested to see which combination of them works best.
retargeting Technology that display the same ads or similar ads after a person leaves the landing pages they have been routed to, even when they switch devices, browsers, and websites.
M-commerce Transactions that take place on mobile devices.
augmented reality Technology whereby a digital image can be superimposed, or incorporated, into a person's real-world view.
search engine optimization (SEO) Making a website more visible so that it shows up nearer to the top of the list in search-engine rankings.
user-generated content (UGC) Content such as photos, blogs, videos, podcasts, and other types of material individuals create, usually free of charge, to share with other people.
community managers People firms hire to help them implement and manage their social media campaigns.
chatbots Computer programs that comprehend and conduct human-like conservations.
search engine marketing (SEM) Marketing designed to get internet traffic to a firm’s website by making it more visible in search engine results.
bounce rate The rate at which people leave a page immediately after clicking on it.
