Minerals

QuestionAnswer
classify arrange into groups according to shared qualities or characteristics.
cleavage a property where minerals break into pieces that have smooth, flat surfaces
color a characteristic in some minerals that is very unique, yet not always reliable. Ex: flourite is green and sulfur is yellow
crystallization the process by which atoms form a solid and arrange themselves in an orderly repeating pattern
flourescence the ability to temporarily absorb a small amount of light and an instant later release a small amount of light of a different wavelength so it looke like it is glowing.
fracture A property where minerals break into pieces that have uneven or curved surfaces.
geology the study of the origin, history, and structure of the earth
hardness the ability to scratch or be scratched by an object
inorganic a substance that does not contain matter that was once alive
lava melted rock material composed of common elements and fluids that reaches and exits the earth's surface
luster the way light reflects of a mineral
magma melted rock material composed of common elements and fluids that are found below earth's surface.
magnetic capable of being attracted by or acquiring the properties of a magnet
metallic luster gives a substance the appearance of being made of metal
mineral the building blocks of rocks- a solid, inorganic substance that occurs in nature and not man made
mohs hardness scale a scale used to rank a mineral from 1-10
nonmetallic luster gives the appearance of being made of something other than metal (e.g. glassy, pearly, dull)
pH the measure of how acidic or alkaline a substance is from 0-14
streak the color of a mineral in its powdered form
streak plate A white hard plate made of porcelain to show color of a mineral.
