| substance | matter that has the same properties throughout it |
| solution | a mixture in which one substance is dissolved in another substance |
| solubility | the amount of one substance that will dissolve in another substance |
| physical state | a form of matter, such as solid, liquid, or gas |
| particles | the tiny parts that make up matter |
| mixture | two or more substances that are combined but do not form a new substance |
| mass | the amount of matter in an object |
| magnetism | a force that pulls together or pushes apart certain metal objects |
| insulator | a material through which electrical or thermal energy cannot move easily |
| density | the mass of a certain volume of matter |
| conductor | a material through which electrical or thermal energy can move easily |
| equal forces | forces that have the same strength |
| frictional force | a contact force that pushes against objects in motion |
| gravitational force | a noncontact force of attraction between two objects |
| kinetic energy | the energy an object has due to its motion |
| potential energy | the stored energy an object has |
| unequal forces | forces that have different strengths |

| decomposer | an organism that breaks down dead plant and animal matter |
