ESS Unit 2
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Ocean Crust | The crust under the ocean |
| Continental Crust | The earth's crust that isn't covered in ocean, it is land. |
| Earthquake | sudden movement of the Earth's plates that causes shaking of the ground |
| Volcano | a mountain that lava can come out of |
| Tsunamis | a giant wave caused by an earth quake |
| seismic wave | waves in the earth's crust caused by earthquakes |
| s-wave | a seismic wave that can only go through solids and is slower than p-waves. It will not go through the earth's core |
| p-wave | the faster seismic wave that travels through any material |
| surface waves | seismic waves that travel slowly along earth's surface and cause lots of destruction |
| crust | the top layer of the earth |
| mantle | the second layer of the earth, it is the largest, it is made of hot solid rock |
| inner core | solid inner layer of the earth. It is made of metal |
| outer core | liquid layer of the earth. It makes the earth magnetic with the movement of the metals in this layer |
| density | the amount of matter in a given space |
| density vs depth inside the earth | density increases the deeper you go inside the earth |
| magnetic field | the area where a magnetic force can be felt |
| lava and magma | hot and liquid rock above ground and under ground |
| frequency | how often something happens |
| magnetic reversal | in earth's history, the magnetic poles have reversed many times. There is evidence of this in the ocean floor |
| erupt/eruption | when lava comes out of a volcano |
| bedrock | solid layer of rock under soils |
| ocean floor | the land on the bottom of the ocean |
| techtonic plate | sections of earth's crust that "float" on the mantle and can move |
| plate boundary | the places where tectonic plates meet |
| convergent boundary | when two plates collide. This creates mountain ranges |
| divergent boundary | when two plates are moving apart. This creates new crust as magma from below comes up and becomes solid. |
| transform boundary | when two plates move along each other in opposite directions. The friction can cause dangerous earth quakes |
| fault | a crack in a tectonic plate were the plates can move |
| lithosphere | the hard rocky layer on the outside of the earth. It includes the crust and upper mantle |
| trench | a deep valley at a divergent boundary |
| ridge | a high point in the land at a convergent boundary |
