What year does the Classical Era take place? 1750-1820
What are the characteristics of the Classical era? Melodies of simple, variety of contrasting moods used for a given piece, more variety in rhythm, and a homophonic texture is often used.
What is the characteristics of a classical symphony? A collection of musical form, comprised of 4 movements, standardized instrumentation of the symphony, and ranges from 25-60 minutes of music.
Name the 3 important classical composers. Joesph Hayden (1732-1809), Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791), and Ludwig Van Beethoven (1770-1827).
What is a theme? present | A, multiple variations of them theme occur | A’, A’’, A’’’, etc.
What can variations involve? Tempo, tonality, timbre, range, texture, etc.
What are the 3 main sections of sonata form? exposition, development, and recapitulation
Exposition presents what? theme
Development creates what? drama
Recapitulation provides what? resolution
What is a minuet? (A), based on a dance
What is a trio? (B), lighter, triple meter
Whats a ternary? ABA
What's a rondo? Multiple themes are presented, but the form returns to the first theme (A) often.
