Wargo - 7.1 - Photosynthesis & Cellular Respiration
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| photosynthesis | a series of chemical reactions that convert light energy, water, and carbon dioxide into the food-energy molecule glucose and give off oxygen |
| cellular respiration | a series of chemical reactions that convert the energy in food molecules into a usable form of energy celled ATP. |
| chloroplasts | the organelle in plants where photosynthesis occurs |
| chlorophyll | Green pigment in plants that absorbs light energy used to carry out photosynthesis |
| mitochondria | Organelle that is the site of cellular respiration which releases energy, called the powerhouse of the cell. |
| glucose | A simple sugar that is an important source of energy. |
| carbon dioxide | A gas that is needed by plants for photosynthesis and is a waste product of cellular respiration. |
| oxygen | gas that is used in cellular respiration and is a waste product of photosynthesis. |
| product | A substance produced in a chemical reaction; on right side of arrow |
| reactant | A chemical substance that is present at the start of a chemical reaction; on left side of arrow |
| Law of Conservation of Mass/Energy | mass and energy cannot be created or destroyed it simply changes form |
