Wargo - 7.1 - Photosynthesis & Cellular Respiration

TermDefinition
photosynthesis a series of chemical reactions that convert light energy, water, and carbon dioxide into the food-energy molecule glucose and give off oxygen
cellular respiration a series of chemical reactions that convert the energy in food molecules into a usable form of energy celled ATP.
chloroplasts the organelle in plants where photosynthesis occurs
chlorophyll Green pigment in plants that absorbs light energy used to carry out photosynthesis
mitochondria Organelle that is the site of cellular respiration which releases energy, called the powerhouse of the cell.
glucose A simple sugar that is an important source of energy.
carbon dioxide A gas that is needed by plants for photosynthesis and is a waste product of cellular respiration.
oxygen gas that is used in cellular respiration and is a waste product of photosynthesis.
product A substance produced in a chemical reaction; on right side of arrow
reactant A chemical substance that is present at the start of a chemical reaction; on left side of arrow
Law of Conservation of Mass/Energy mass and energy cannot be created or destroyed it simply changes form
