TermDefinition
Hair, Skin, Nails these provide the first line of defense from disease and remove waste through sweat; they are considered the structures of the Integumentary System.
Epidermis Top, outermost layer of your skin
Melanin Substance that gives skin its color. This can also protect your skin from the Sun’s UV rays
Dermis Middle layer of skin
Hypodermis Also called subcutaneous tissue (fat). Deepest layer of skin
Brain Sends signals to the spinal cord. Housed in your skull
Spinal Cord Transports signals from the brain to the nerves
Nerves Receives messages from the spinal cord and transports them throughout the body
Neuron specialized messenger cells that transmits information between different areas of the nervous system through electrical impulses
Nervous System System that gathers and interprets information from your body and then responds to that information to help keep your body functioning and safe
Integumentary System System that is 1st line of defense against disease and pathogens. Helps maintain homeostasis and removes waste.
Homeostasis Process that maintains balance and a stable internal environment.
Immune System System that recognizes substances that may cause disease and attacks, and removes foreign cells

Tendon connective tissue that connects muscle to bone
Ligament connective tissue that connects bone to bone
