Energy The ability to do work
Potential Energy The energy that is in a stored form that can be released when needed
Kinetic Energy The energy associated with motion
Law of Conservation of Energy Energy cannot be created or destroyed. That is, energy cannot appear out of nowhere and cannot disappear, instead it must go somewhere
Energy Transfer The process of energy moving from one object, system, or place to another, without changing its form.
Energy Transformation The processes that convert energy from one type (e.g. kinetic, gravitational, potential, chemical energy) into another type.
Energy Efficiency The ratio of useful energy output to the total energy input.
Energy Equation Efficiency(%) = ( Total Energy Input / Useful Energy Output)×100
Open System A system that can exchange both matter and energy with its surroundings.
Closed System A system that can exchange energy but not matter with its surroundings.
Isolated System A system that cannot exchange either matter or energy with its surroundings.
Sankey Diagram A flow chart that uses arrows of varying widths to visually represent the proportions of energy, material, or cost transfers within a system.
