Genetics study stack
| Term | Definition |

| Sexual reproduction | the process in which two parents pass on their genes to create offspring |
| Asexual reproduction | The process un which only one parent passes on its genetic information to create offspring = cloning |
| Recessive | the trait is inherited only if the offspring inherits 2 copies of the allele for that trait (lowercase letters) |
| Dominant | the trait is inherited as long as the offspring receives at least one copy of the allele for that trait (uppercase letters) |
| Chromosome | a long piece of DNA that contains many genes |
| DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) | a type of molecule that genes and chromosomes are made of |
| Feature | A characteristic that all members of a species have |
| Trait | a specific characteristic of an individual organism |
| Variation | any difference in trait between individual organisms |
| Function | how something works |
| Protein molecules | a large type of molecule that performs important functions inside organisms |
| Structure | the way something is shaped or constructed |
| Gene | an instruction for making a protein molecule |
| Gene version (allele) | a specific for of a gene that provides instructions for making a particular protein molecule |
| Mutation | A random change to a gene that sometimes results in a new trait |
| Inherit | to receive genes from a parent |
| Heterozygous | having gene versions that are different |
| Homozygous | having gene versions that are the same |
