SOL 6.3
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Atmosphere | The layer of gas surrounding a planet that is held in place by gravity |
| Earth's Magnetic Field | Magnetic lines of force from Earth's polar north and south, acting like a giant magnet |
| Axis | The imaginary line through Earth that extends from the North Pole to the South Pole and is the center of Earth's rotation |
| Hemisphere | Half of a sphere; Earth and the celestial sphere can be divided into northern and southern or eastern and western hemispheres |
| Orbit | A curved path followed by a satellite as it revolves around an object |
| Revolution | The movement of one object around a center or another object |
| Rotation | The spinning of Earth on its axis that causes day and night to occur |
| Seasons | The four natural divisions of the year based on changes in temperature due to varying amounts of sunlight received (both intensity and number of daylight hours vary); caused by the tilt of Earth during its revolution |
| Tilt | The slant of Earth’s axis, which is 23.5 degrees from vertical compared to Earth’s orbital plane around the Sun; results in the North Pole always pointing toward the North Star |
| Crescent Moon | A shape of the Moon that is smaller than a quarter moon but larger than a new moon |
| First Quarter Moon | When the right half of the Moon is illuminated and the lunar cycle is in the waxing phase |
| Full Moon | The lunar phase when Earth is between the Sun and Moon and all of the illuminated portion is seen from Earth |
| Gibbous Moon | A shape of the Moon that is greater than a quarter moon but less than a full moon |
| Last or Third Quarter Moon | When the left half of the Moon is illuminated and the lunar cycle is in the waning phase |
| Lunar Cycle | The Moon’s repeated pattern of movement and changes in appearance due to its position relative to Earth and the Sun |
| Lunar Phase | The shape of the illuminated portion of the Moon as seen by an observer, usually on Earth |
| New Moon | The lunar phase when the Moon is between the Sun and Earth and none of the illuminated portion is seen from Earth |
