Energy in the Cell
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| calorie | The amount of energy required to raise 1 gram of water by 1 degree Celsius |
| Kilocalorie or Calorie | 1000 calories |
| Mitochondria | An organelle inside of eukaryotic cells that produces ATP |
| Chloroplast | An organelle in plant cells that uses light energy to produce sugars |
| ATP (Adenosine Tri-Phosphate) | The molecule that most cells use as energy: cellular energy |
| ADP (Adenosine Di-Phosphate) | Lower energy molecule that is converted to ATP. |
| Glycolysis | Process that breaks glucose (sugar) into pyruvate and gives the cell a little bit of energy. |
| Electron Transport Chain | A series of protein enzymes that pass electrons to set up a proton gradient across a membrane. |
| ATP Synthase | A protein enzyme that makes ATP as H+ passes through it. |
| Aerobic | Requires oxygen. |
| Anaerobic | Can happen without oxygen. |
| Fermentation | The process of producing energy without oxygen. |
