Heredity

TermDefinition
Heredity The passing of traits from parents to offspring.
Trait A characteristic or feature of an organism.
Inherited Traits Traits that are passed down from parents to their offspring.
Acquired Traits Traits that are developed over time due to environment or experience.
Offspring The children or young of a particular organism.
Variation Differences among individuals within a species.
Species A group of similar organisms capable of reproducing.
Environment The surroundings or conditions in which an organism lives.
Adaptation A trait that helps an organism survive in its environment.
Instinct A behavior an organism is born with and does not have to learn.
Learned Behavior A behavior an organism acquires through experience.
Characteristic A distinguishing feature or quality of an organism.
Parent An organism that produces offspring.
DNA The molecule that carries genetic information.
Genes Units of heredity that determine traits.
What is heredity? The passing of traits from parents to offspring.
Which of the following is an example of an inherited trait? Eye color, dimples, natural hair type.
Which of these is an acquired trait? Speaking a new language, playing an instrument.
How are offspring similar to their parents? They inherit traits such as eye color and hair type.
Why do siblings sometimes look different from each other? They inherit different combinations of traits from both parents.
Which of these is NOT inherited from parents? A favorite hobby, spoken language, a scar from an injury.
How do learned behaviors differ from inherited traits? Learned behaviors come from experience; inherited traits come from parents.
A puppy has the same fur color as its parents. What does this show? Heredity—the trait was passed down from parent to offspring.
What is an example of a learned behavior? Reading a book, playing a sport.
What is an example of an instinct? A bird building a nest without being taught.
Liam notices that his baby brother has the same dimples as their dad. What does this suggest? Dimples are an inherited trait passed from parent to child.
A scientist observes that ducklings follow their mother right after hatching. What type of trait is this? This is an instinct; the behavior happens naturally without being taught.
A child learns how to ride a bike from their older sibling. Is this inherited or acquired? Acquired—riding a bike is a learned skill, not inherited.
A gardener notices that some plants grow taller when given more sunlight. Is this an inherited trait? No—plant height due to sunlight is an environmental factor, not heredity.
A boy is born with curly hair, just like both of his parents. Why does this happen? Curly hair is an inherited trait passed down through genes.
