periodic table group
different groups in the periodic table, and their characteristics.
| Group | Characteristics |
|---|---|
| alkali metals | extremely reactive, never found in nature, one valence electron |
| actinides | transition metals at the bottom of the chart, radioactive + unstable |
| alkaline earth metals | reactive, silver color, two valence electrons |
| CHNOPS | this is not a group, they are elements formed in life |
| lanthanides | transition metals at the bottom of the chart, shiny + reactive |
| noble gases | unreactive non-metals, colorless and odorless at room temperature |
| halogens | all non-metals, extremely reactive, poor conductors of heat + electricity, tend to form salts |
| transition metals | moderate range of reactivity, range of properties, shiny, good conductors of heat + electricity |
| basic metals | metals past the transition metals, more valence electrons, brittle, low melting points |
| metalloids | between metals/non-metals in properties, appear to be metals, brittle, poor conductors |
| hydrogen | sun burns hydrogen, one electron, simplest atom, diatomic, reactive gas, family of its own |
| non-metals | doesn't have the properties of metals, can be solids, liquids, or gases, makes negative ions, gains electrons |
