Periodic Table

A StudyStack of the Periodic Table.

TermDefinition
Actinides Rare Earth Metals at bottom of Periodic Table. Radioactive and unstable.
Halogens Group 17A: Non-metals, very reactive, poor conductors of heat and electricity. Tend to form salts.
Alkaline Earth Metals Group 2A: Reactive, silver color.
Noble Gases Group 18A: Unreactive non-metals, colorless and odorless at room temperature.
Transition Metals Group 3A-12A: Largest group of elements, moderate range of reactivity, shiny, good conductors of heat and electricity.
Alkali Group 1A: Extremely reactive, never found in nature in pure form.
Lanthanides Rare Earth Metals at bottom of Periodic Table. Shiny and reactive.
CHNOPS Not a group, but considered elements formed in life. Stands for Carbon, Hydrogen, Nitrogen, Oxygen, Phosphorus, and Sulfur.
Family/Group Vertical columns in Periodic Table, determines valence electrons except for transition metals.
Period Horizontal rows in Periodic Table, adds electron shells for each next period.
Valence Electrons The amount of electrons in the outer shell.
Electron Shell Rings surrounding the nucleus of the atom.
Bohr Diagram A diagram of an element atom showing the electron shells and the nucleus.
Lewis Dot Diagram A diagram of an element atom showing the abbreviation of the element, the valence electrons of it , and atom bonds.
Neutron A neutral charge subatomic particle found in the nucleus of an atom.
Proton A positive charge subatomic particle found in the nucleus of an atom.
Electron A negative charge subatomic particle found in the electron shells or electron cloud surrounding the nucleus.
Atomic Mass The average mass number of an element's isotopes.
Mass Number The amount of protons and neutrons in an element.
Isotope A version of an element with the same amount of protons and electrons but a different amount of neutrons.
Atomic Number The amount of protons in an element.
Nucleus The center of an atom, containing protons and neutrons.
Nucleons A general term for protons and neutrons, referring to subatomic particles in the nucleus.
Subatomic Particle A particle such as a proton or electron that is smaller than an atom.
Atom The basic unit of a chemical element.
Ion An atom or molecule with an electric charge.
Element A basic substance made up of one type of atom.
Molecule A group of atoms bonded together.
Compound A substance made from two or more elements that have been chemically joined.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
