Lunar Phases (Phases of the Moon)

TermDefinition
New Moon Moon is completely dark. It is located between the Sun and the Earth.
Waxing Crescent Moon is less than half lit on the right side.
First Quarter Moon is half lit on the right side..
Waxing Gibbous Moon is more than half lit on the right side.
Full Moon Moon is completely lit. The earth is between the Sun and the Moon.
Waning Gibbous Moon is more than half lit on the left side.
Last Quarter Moon is more than half lit on the left side. It is also sometimes called "Third Quarter."
Waning Crescent Moon is less than half lit on the left side.
Day The time for the Earth to make one rotation (24 Hrs.)
Month The time required for the Moon to go through on cycle of phases (29.5 Days)
Solar Year The time required for the Earth to make one orbit of the Sun (365.24 Days).
Leap Year A year with an extra day (Feb 29th) every 4 years. Occurs on years which evenly divide by 4.
