| scientific theory | a well-tested scientific concept that explains a wide range of observation |
| Controlled experiment | an experiment in which only one variable is manipulated at a time |
| variable | one of the factors that can change in an experiment |

| hypothesis | a possible explanation for an observation or answer to a scientific question |
