| producer | an organism that makes it own food or energy through photosynthesis |
| photosynthesis | a process used by plants to make their own energy |
| carbon dioxide | gas that plants use to make food |
| consumer | an organism that eats other organisms to obtain energy |
| herbivore | plant-eater; an organism that consumes only plants for energy |
| omnivore | plant and meat-eater; an organism that consumes both plants and animals for energy |
| carnivore | meat-eater; an organism that consumes only other animals |
| decomposer | an organism responsible for breaking down dead plants and animals and returning the nutrients to the soil |
| environment | the surroundings of an area, including the air, soil, water, and organisms |
| cycle | a series of events in a repeating pattern |
| food chain | a model used to show a single path energy takes as it moves through an ecosystem |
| food web | a model used to show multiple paths energy takes as it moves through an ecosystem |
