Nervous System

Essentials to Healthcare

TermDefinition
somatic controls voluntary movements (e.g., moving arms, walking)
autonomic controls involuntary functions (e.g., heart rate, digestion)
parasympathetic "rest and digest" system; slow heart rate, increases digestion
sympathetic "fight or flight" system; speeds up heart rate, increases alertness
nervous system divisions central & peripheral
central nervous system (CNS) brain & spinal cord – processes information
peripheral nervous system (PNS) nerves outside CNS (cranial & spinal nerves) – connect CNS to the body
location of the cerebrum largest part of the brain, top/front area
frontal lobe thinking, planning, movement
parietal lobe touch, pain, temperature
temporal lobe hearing, memory
occipital lobe vision
cerebellum "little brain" at the back; controls balance & coordination
medulla oblongata controls breathing, heart rate, swallowing
concussion a mild brain injury; causes confusion, dizziness
TBI (traumatic brain injury) more severe than a concussion; can cause memory loss, speech issues
meningitis infection of the brain/spinal cord lining; symptoms: fever, stiff neck
alzheimer's brain disease causing memory loss, confusion, worsens over time
how many cranial nerves? 12 pairs
cranial/spinal nerves peripheral nervous system (PNS)
myelin sheath fatty layer around the axons; speeds up nerve signals
CNS protection skull → protects the brain blood-brain barrier → stops harmful substances from entering the brain
axon sends signals AWAY from the cell body
dendrite receive signals FROM other neurons
sensory carries signals TO the brain (touch, pain)
motor carries signals FROM the brain (muscle movement)
fight-or-flight sympathetic
what happens in F-O-F mode? increased heart rate, fast breathing, sweating, dilated pupils, more blood to muscles
rest-and-digest parasympathetic
what happens in R-A-D mode? slowed heart rate, digestion improves, relaxed muscles, normal breathing

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
