TermDefinition
centromere holds 2 duplicated halves of a chromosome together
prophase the first stage of mitosis where the chromosomes form (chromatin condenses and sister chromatids connect)
anaphase where the sister chromatids separate from each other
stem cell an undifferentiated cell that maintains the ability to develop into specialized cells
meiosis part of sexual reproduction that process that produces haploid gametes
interphase the phase in the cell cycle that is divided into G1, S, and G2; it is where the cell grows and the DNA is copied
metaphase the second stage of mitosis where spindle fibers attach to the centromeres and the chromosomes line up at the equator
histone groups of proteins that DNA wraps around
sexual reproduction reproduction where 2 gametes fuse to make 1 organism
chromosome long continuous thread of DNA that is composed of genes; made of 2 sister chromatids. They are divided into genes
binary fission a type of asexual reproductive strategy used by prokaryotes
chromatid one-half of a duplicated chromosome; they are connected by a centromere
chromatin DNA plus histone proteins;  DNa is found this way during interphase
mitosis a type of asexual reproduction that is used by multicellular organisms; it is the division of the cell's nucleus
tissue a group of cells working together to for the same function
cytokinesis the division of a cell's cytoplasm
telomere the ends of DNA molecules
asexual reproduction the general term for the reproduction where 1 cell splits into 2 individual organisms
apoptosis the process that is the "programmed cell death." It is used to destroy cancer cells or cut out the shape of a baby's fingers during development
carcinogen a substance that promotes the development of cancer

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
