Tropical Storms
8th Grade Unit 15
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Storm Surge | a temporary rise in sea level that occurs during a storm. It's caused by strong winds pushing water toward the shore |
| Hurricane | A tropical system with winds that have reached a constant speed of 74 miles per hour or more |
| Cyclones | a storm that rotates around a low-pressure area in the atmosphere |
| Typhoons | a giant, rotating storm that brings wind, rain, and destruction |
| Latitudes | measures the distance north or south of the equator. They start at the equator and run east and west, parallel to the equator. |
| Ocean Currents | the movement of ocean water in a continuous, directed flow. They can be found on the ocean's surface and in its depths. |
| Low-Pressure System | an area in the atmosphere where the air pressure is lower than the surrounding areas, typically causing air to rise and often leading to cloud formation and precipitation |
| Coriolis Effect | the apparent deflection of a moving object, like wind or ocean currents, as it travels across the Earth's surface due to the planet's rotation, causing it to curve to the right in the Northern Hemisphere and to the left in the Southern Hemisphere |
| Wind Shear | the change in speed and direction of wind over a short distance |
| Low Wind Shear | a rapid change in wind speed or direction over a short distance, particularly near the ground, where the wind conditions can significantly differ within a small vertical area, potentially impacting aircraft during takeoff and landing |
| High Wind Shear | when wind speed or direction changes over a distance, either horizontally or vertically. It can be dangerous for aircraft and can contribute to severe thunderstorms and hurricanes. |
| Tropical Depressions | a low-pressure area of thunderstorms and clouds with sustained winds of 38 miles per hour (mph) or less. |
| Tropical Storms | a rotating storm system that originates over warm tropical oceans, characterized by a low pressure center, strong winds ranging from 39 to 73 miles per hour, and swirling clouds, considered a step below a hurricane in intensity |
