Energy from the Sun
8th Grade Unit 13
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Condensation | the process where water vapor (a gas) turns into liquid water |
| Precipitation | water released from clouds in the form of rain, freezing rain, sleet, snow, or hail |
| Evaporation | the process where a liquid changes into a gas |
| Water Vapor | water in its gaseous state |
| Climate | the average weather conditions in a specific region over a long period of time, usually measured in decades, encompassing factors like temperature, precipitation, and humidity patterns, rather than just the current weather conditions |
| Solar Energy | the energy derived from the sun's radiation, which can be captured and converted into usable forms like heat or electricity using technologies like solar panels |
| Hydrosphere | all the water on Earth, including the water in oceans, rivers, lakes, ice caps, groundwater, and even water vapor in the air |
| Water Cycle | the continuous movement of water on, above, and below the Earth's surface, where water evaporates from bodies of water, rises into the atmosphere as vapor, condenses to form clouds, and falls back to the Earth as precipitation like rain or snow |
| Humidity | the amount of water vapor in the air |
| Air Pressure | the force the air exerts on the earth measured with a barometer |
| Wind | the movement of air or other gases relative to the Earth's surface |
| Cloud Cover | the fraction of the sky obscured by clouds on average when observed from a particular location. |
| Weather | the state of the atmosphere at a given time and place. It's affected by many factors, including temperature, wind, precipitation, humidity, and air pressure |
| Atmosphere | a mixture of gases that surrounds the Earth. |
| Heat Capacity | the amount of heat energy needed to raise the temperature of a specific quantity of a substance by one degree Celsius |
| Ocean Currents | a continuous, directed movement of seawater, essentially like a river in the ocean, driven by forces like wind, temperature differences, and Earth's rotation, which transports heat and nutrients across large areas of the globe |
| Convection | the process of heat transfer through the movement of a fluid (like air or water), where warmer parts rise and cooler parts sink, creating a circulation pattern called a convection current |
| Dense | how heavy something is for its size |
| Land Breeze | a local wind system characterized by a flow from land to water late at night |
| Sea Breeze | a gentle wind that blows from the ocean or sea toward the land. It occurs during the day when land heats up faster than water. |
