Skeletal System
7th Grade Unit30
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Skeletal System | the body's framework made up of bones and cartilage that provides support, allows movement, protects internal organs, and stores minerals |
| Exoskeletons | hard covering that supports and protects the bodies of some types of animals |
| Endoskeletons | an internal skeleton or supporting framework in an anima |
| Production of Blood Cells | called "hematopoiesis" and occurs primarily in the bone marrow, where specialized stem cells develop into red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets, which are then released into the bloodstream |
| Storage | the process of keeping minerals, fat, and blood-forming tissue in bones and bone marrow |
| Homeostasis | the body's ability to maintain a stable internal environment, even when external conditions change, by constantly adjusting various factors like temperature, blood sugar, and water levels to stay within a normal range |
| Bones | the hard, rigid parts of the body that support and protect the body's structure. They are made of living tissue that contains calcium, collagen, and other minerals |
| Axial Skeletal System | the central core of the body's skeleton, consisting of the skull, vertebral column (spine), and ribcage, which primarily functions to protect vital organs like the brain and spinal cord, and provide structural support for the body's central axis |
| Appendicular Skeletal System | the part of the skeletal system that includes the bones of the limbs (arms and legs), along with the shoulder and pelvic girdles that connect them to the body's central axis, essentially allowing for movement and mobility in the extremities |
| Joints | the place where two or more bones meet in the body, allowing for movement |
| Ligaments | bands of tissue that connect bones and joints, and help keep them stable. They are made of strong, flexible collagen fibers |
| Tendons | fibrous tissues that attach muscles to bones or other structures, allowing for movement. They are similar to strong, flexible cords or ropes |
| Movement | the change in position of bones or body parts around joints |
| Support | provide a framework that holds the body upright and keeps it from collapsing. It helps maintain the body's shape and posture |
| Protect | help the body's internal organs by surrounding them with bones, cartilage, and other tissues |
