Endocrine System a network of glands and organs that produce hormones that travel through the bloodstream to control many bodily functions
Glands cell or organ that produces and releases substances into the body
Exocrine Glands glands that release substances onto body surfaces through ducts
Endocrine Glands organs that produce hormones that travel through the bloodstream to control many bodily functions
Hormones chemical messengers produced by glands in the body that travel through the bloodstream to regulate various bodily functions
Target Cells any cell that has a specific receptor for an antigen or antibody or hormone or drug, or is the focus of contact by a virus or phagocyte or nerve fiber etc.
Negative Feedback Loop a regulatory mechanism that counteracts a change to maintain an ideal level
Homeostasis the body's ability to maintain a stable internal environment, like a balanced temperature or blood sugar level, even when external conditions change, essentially keeping things "in balance"
Hypothalamus The area of the brain that controls body temperature, hunger, and thirst
Pituitary Gland small gland at the base of the brain that controls many of the body's functions. It's sometimes called the "master gland" because it controls other endocrine glands
Pineal Gland a small, cone-shaped gland located in the center of the brain. It produces and secretes the hormone melatonin, which plays a crucial role in regulating sleep-wake cycles and circadian rhythms.
Thyroid a small, butterfly-shaped gland located in the front of the neck. It produces hormones that regulate metabolism, growth, and development
Thymus small gland in the lymphatic system that makes and trains special white blood cells called T-cells
Pancreas gland located in the abdomen that produces enzymes that aid in digestion and hormones that regulate blood sugar levels
Adrenal Glands small, triangular-shaped glands that sit on top of the kidneys. They produce hormones that help regulate many important bodily functions
Testicles One of two egg-shaped glands inside the scrotum that produce sperm and male hormone
Ovaries small, oval-shaped glands located on either side of your uterus. They produce and store your eggs (also called ovum) and make hormones that control your menstrual cycle and pregnancy
