Intro to Ecology

Ecology terms

TermDefinition
Ecology the study of how organisms interact with one another and with their environment.
Biotic factor an environmental factor associated with living things
Abiotic factor an environmental factor associated with non- living things
Population A group of organisms of the same species that live in a specific geographical location
Species A group of organisms that are closely related and can mate to produce fertile offspring
ecosystem A community of organisms and their biotic, or nonliving environment
community All of the population of species that live in the same habitat and interact with each other
Biomes A large region characterized by a specific type of climate and certain types of plant and animal communities
niche The role of a species in its community, including use of its habitat and its relationships with other species
habitat the place where an organism usually lives
