| Nervous System | a complex network of cells, tissues, and organs that controls and coordinates all bodily functions |
| Central Nervous System | the part of the nervous system that consists of the brain and spinal cord |
| Peripheral Nervous System | the network of nerves that extends throughout the body, connecting the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) to all other parts of the body, allowing for sensory information to reach the brain and motor commands to be sent to muscles and organs |
| Somatic Nervous System | the part of the nervous system that controls voluntary movement and processes sensory information |
| Autonomic Nervous System | a part of the nervous system that controls involuntary body functions, such as: heart rate, blood pressure, digestion, breathing, sweating, and urination |
| Brain | the central organ of the nervous system, located in the skull. It controls all bodily functions, including thought, memory, emotion, movement, and perception |
| Cerebrum | he largest part of your brain and includes parts above and forward of your cerebellum. Itis the part of your brain that starts and manages conscious thoughts; meaning, things that you actively think about or do |
| Cerebellum | The portion of the brain in the back of the head between the cerebrum and the brain stem. It controls balance for walking and standing, and other complex motor functions. |
| Brain Stem | the lower part of the brain that connects to the spinal cord. It is made up of three parts: the midbrain, pons, and medulla oblongata. It controls many vital functions, such as breathing, heart rate, blood pressure, and consciousness |
| Spinal Cord | a bundle of nerves that runs from the base of the brain down the center of the back. It is part of the central nervous system and carries messages between the brain and the rest of the body. |
| Neurons | A type of cell that receives and sends messages from the body to the brain and back to the body |
| Reflex | an automatic, involuntary response by the body to a stimulus, happening nearly instantly without conscious thought, often acting to protect the body from harm |
