Survival Adaptations

Adaptation the process by which an organism adjusts to its environment to improve its chances of survival
Inherited Traits a specific characteristic or feature that an organism receives from its parents through genes
Variations the natural differences that exist between individuals of the same species, caused by genetic factors and environmental influences, making each organism slightly unique from one another
Natural Selection a biological process where organisms with traits that better suit their environment are more likely to survive and reproduce, passing on those advantageous traits to their offspring, causing a population to change over time
Structural Adaptations a physical feature of an organism, like its shape, body covering, or specialized body parts, that helps it survive and thrive in its environment
Camoflauge a defense mechanism that helps organisms hide from predators and prey by blending in with their surroundings
Behavioral Adaptations a change in an organism's actions or behavior that helps it survive and thrive in its environment
Migration when animals move from one place to another, often over long distances
Physiological Adaptations an internal bodily process or function that an organism has developed to help it survive and thrive in its environment
Echolocation a technique used by animals, such as bats, dolphins, and a few species of birds, to determine the location of objects using the reflection of sound waves
Spores a single-celled reproductive unit produced by certain organisms like fungi, plants (like ferns and mosses), and bacteria
Nocturnal active at night and sleeping during the day
Mimicry phenomenon characterized by the superficial resemblance of two or more organisms that are not closely related taxonomically
Dormancy a period when an organism's growth, development, and activity are temporarily reduced or stopped
