Atom Tiny spheres of matter so small they are invisible
Molecules A combination of atoms that form larger chemical groupings
Macromolecules Atoms and molecules that combine to form larger and more complex chemicals
Organelles Chemical structures organized into larger units
Cells The smallest and most numerous structural units that possess and exhibit the basic characteristics of living matter
Tissue A group of many similar cells that all developed together from the same parts of the embryo and all perform a certain function
Organ A structure made up of several different kinds of tissues arranged, so that together they can perform a special function
organ system Varying numbers and kinds of organs arranged so that they together can perform complex functions
Anatomical position The reference position, where the body is in an erect posture with arms at the sides, and palms pointing forward, with head and feet also pointing forward
Anterior The front or in front of
Posterior The back or in back of
Ventral Towards the belly
Dorsal Towards the back
Medial Towards the midline of the body
Lateral Towards the side of the body or away from its midline
Proximal Toward or near the trunk of the body, or nearest the points of origin of one of its parts
Distal Away from or farthest from the trunk, or furthest fromthe points of origin of a body parts
Superficial Near the surface
Deep Farther away from the body surface
Lumen The hollow area of an organ
Central Near the center
Peripheral Around the boundary
Medullary The inner region or core of an organ
Cortical An outer region or layer of an organ
Basal The base or widest part of an organ
Apical The narrow tip of an organ
Sagittal plane Any length wise plane, running from front to back and top to bottom, dividing the body or any of its parts into left and right side
Coronal plane Any length wise plane, running from side to side and top to bottom, dividing the body or any of its parts into an anterior and posterior portions; also called a frontal plane
Transverse plane Any crosswise plane that divides the body or any of its parts into upper and lower parts; also called a horizontal plane
