TermDefinition
Westward Expansion A movement across America in the early 1840’s where people would move west into the Louisiana purchase area
Manifest Destiny A belief Americans had in which it was their god given right to move west by any means necessary
Indian Removal Act A treaty created by the American government that moved Native Americans into current day Oklahoma to make room for American settlers
Oregon Trail A 2,000 mile long trail people moving west used to get to current day Oregon
Covered Wagons Long, narrow wagons used to carry people’s belongings on the trail
Mormon Trail A trail people of the Mormon church used to walk to freedom after being persecuted for their beliefs. The trail ended in Salt Lake City, Utah
California Trail A branch down of the Oregon trail used to get to current day California.
Gold Rush In the late 1840d’s, John Sutter found gold in the California river while working on his mill. Word quickly spread, and soon people were fleeing towards California in hopes of sticking it rich
Old Spanish Trail An extension of the California trail, used to trade goods like gold and for people to look for land
Santa Fe trail A dangerous shortcut, used to trade silver
Trail of Tears The American government used this trail to walk Native Americans to their designated area in Oklahoma. 1/3 of the tribe would die on this journey due to a lack of supplies and harsh conditions
Donner Party A party of wagons that got tricked into heading into the Rocky Mountains after being told it would take time off of the journey. They got stranded due to a wagon issue, and quickly ran out of supplies.
American Fur Company A company selling beaver pelts to rich people in Europe. One of the first motivators for people to move westward.
