| Invertebrate | An organism that does not have a backbone. |
| vertebrate | An organism with a backbone. |
| mammal | A warm-blooded animal that gives birth to live young, feeds milk to its young, and that usually has hair or fur covering most of its skin. |
| bird | A warm-blooded animal that has wings, two legs, feathers, and a beak; lays eggs. |
| amphibian | A cold-blooded animal that is born in the water and has gills, which grows up to live on the land and have lungs. This animal lays eggs. |
| reptile | A cold-blooded animal that has lungs and a skeleton and whose skin is usually covered with scales. This animal lays eggs. |
| fish | A cold-blooded animal with fins and gills that lives in water. This animal lays eggs. |
| vascular | Having special tubes that transport water and nutrients. |
| nonvascular | Not having special tubes to carry water and nutrients. Instead, these plants absorb water and nutrients directly through their surfaces. |
| spores | Small organisms that can survive under unfavorable conditions for a long time and then grow into new organisms. |
