Repro. Diversity

7th Grade Unit 33

TermDefinition
Reproduction the process by which living organisms create new individuals, or offspring, that are similar to themselves, ensuring the continuation of a species through generations
Asexual Reproduction creating new offspring from a single parent, where the new individuals are genetically identical to the parent because no fusion of gametes (sperm and egg) occurs
Sexual Reproduction the creation of new offspring by combining genetic material from two different parents, typically through the fusion of a male sperm cell and a female egg cell, resulting in genetically unique offspring
Binary Fission a type of asexual reproduction where a single-celled organism divides into two identical daughter cells, essentially splitting itself in half to create two new organisms with the same genetic material
Budding a type of asexual reproduction where a new organism grows from a small outgrowth or "bud" on the body of a parent organism, eventually detaching to become a separate individual
Spore Formation a process where certain organisms produce tiny, single-celled reproductive units called spores, which can germinate and grow into new individuals under favorable conditions
Fragmentation a type of asexual reproduction where an organism breaks into smaller pieces (fragments), and each fragment grows into a new, genetically identical individual
Vegetative Propagation a plant growing a new plant from a part of its own body, like a stem, root, or leaf, instead of using seeds, essentially creating a clone of itself through asexual reproduction
Fertilization the process where a sperm cell and an egg cell join to form a zygote, which eventually develops into an offspring
Zygote the single cell formed when a sperm cell (male gamete) fertilizes an egg cell (female gamete)
Pollination the process where pollen grains from the male part (anther) of a flower are transferred to the female part (stigma) of a flower

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
