Photoautotrophy II

QuestionAnswer
What is photoautotrophy? The process by which plants use sunlight to convert inorganic substances into organic nutrients.
What are the four critical elements in living cells? Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), Sulfur (S), Carbon (C)
What are macronutrients? Essential nutrients needed in large amounts (e.g., Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potassium, Calcium).
What are micronutrients? Essential nutrients required in small amounts (e.g., Iron, Zinc, Copper, Molybdenum, Nickel).
Name three macronutrients and their functions. Nitrogen (N) – Used in chlorophyll, DNA, ATP synthesis. Phosphorus (P) – Energy transfer (ATP), DNA, RNA synthesis. Potassium (K) – Water regulation, enzyme activation.
What structure connects plant cells to aid nutrient transport? Plasmodesmata
What is the function of the plasma membrane in nutrient uptake? Selectively accumulates nutrients while maintaining cell integrity.
What happens when a plant lacks Nitrogen (N)? Chlorosis (yellowing of leaves).
What are the symptoms of Phosphorus (P) deficiency? Purple foliage due to its role in DNA and ATP synthesis.
Why do plants use Potassium (K) instead of Sodium (Na)? Plants evolved from freshwater algae and use K+ for ion balance instead of Na+.
What happens with Calcium (Ca) deficiency? Curled leaves (important for cell wall stability).
What is the primary role of micronutrients in plants? Act as co-factors in electron transport chains & enzyme complexes.
Name two micronutrients and their roles. Iron (Fe) – Important in chlorophyll synthesis & electron transport. Zinc (Zn) – Protein synthesis & enzyme function.
How do hydroponic solutions relate to plant nutrition? They provide plants with essential inorganic nutrients in available ionic forms.
What are two key nutrients absorbed from hydroponic solutions? CO2 (for photosynthesis) & simple inorganic ions (for growth).
What are the key macronutrients for plants vs. animals? Plants: N, P, K, Ca Animals: N, S, K, Cl, Ca (RDA > 1000 mg)
What are the key micronutrients for plants vs. animals? Plants: Mo, Ni, Cu, Zn, Fe, B, Cl Animals: P, Na, Mg, Fe (RDA up to 750 mg)

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
