What are the two main divisions of the gastrointestinal system? GI Tract & Accessory Organs
Name the main components of the GI Tract. Oral cavity, Oesophagus, Stomach, Small intestine, Large intestine, Rectum, Anus
Name the Accessory Organs of the digestive system. Liver, Gallbladder, Pancreas, Appendix
What are the two types of palates? Hard palate (anterior) & Soft palate (posterior)
What are the three major salivary glands, and what do they secrete? Parotid – Watery saliva with enzymes Submandibular – Mixed (enzyme & mucus) Sublingual – Mostly mucus
What is the function of the oesophagus? A muscular tube (~25 cm) that connects the throat to the stomach, moving food via peristalsis.
Name the three parts of the stomach. Fundus, Body, Pylorus
What are the three muscle layers in the stomach? Longitudinal, Circular, Oblique
What are the three sections of the small intestine? Duodenum (~25 cm) – Receives bile & pancreatic secretions Jejunum (~2.5 m) – Primary site for absorption Ileum (~2-4 m) – Absorbs bile salts & vitamins
What structures increase absorption in the small intestine? Villi & Microvilli (Brush Border)
What vessels are found inside each villus? Arteriole, Venule, Lymph vessel
What are the main sections of the large intestine? Caecum, Colon (Ascending, Transverse, Descending, Sigmoid), Rectum, Anus
What is the function of the Teniae Coli and Haustra? Teniae Coli – Longitudinal muscle bands Haustra – Pouches formed by contractions of the Teniae Coli
What are the two sphincters in the anus? Internal (smooth muscle, involuntary) External (striated muscle, voluntary)
What are the six main processes of digestion? Ingestion, Propulsion, Mechanical Digestion, Chemical Digestion, Absorption, Defecation
What are the three phases of digestion? Cephalic Phase – Prepares digestion via neural stimulation Gastric Phase – Stomach activity stimulated by gastrin Intestinal Phase – Digestion continues in the small intestine
What is the Gastroileal Reflex? Moves chyme from the ileum into the caecum.
What is the Gastrocolic Reflex? Promotes movement into the rectum after meals.
What is diarrhoea? Increased gut motility leading to frequent, watery stools.
What is constipation? Decreased gut motility, leading to hard stools.
Name two inflammatory GI conditions. Crohn’s Disease & Ulcerative Colitis (Inflammatory Bowel Disease - IBD)
What is Omphalocele? A congenital defect where the bowel develops outside the abdominal cavity.
