Earth' Air and Water
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Sublimation | conversion of a substance from the solid to the gaseous state without its becoming liquid |
| Transpiration | the physiological loss of water in the form of water vapor, mainly from the stomata in leaves |
| Evaporation | the process that changes liquid water to gaseous water (water vapor) |
| Condensation | the process where water vapor becomes liquid |
| Deposition | occurs when water vapor (gas) changes into ice (solid) without going through the liquid phase |
| Runoff | the draining away of water (or substances carried in it) from the surface of an area of land, a building or structure |
| Coriolis Effect | an apparent deflection of moving objects (like air currents and ocean currents) caused by the Earth's rotation |
| Surface Currents vs. Deep Currents | surface circulation, which stirs a relatively thin upper layer of the sea, and deep circulation, which sweeps along the deep-sea floor. |
| Convection (in air and water) | is a heat transfer process occurring in fluids (liquids and gases) where warmer, less dense areas rise, and cooler, denser areas sink, creating currents that move heat |
| Precipitation | Liquid water evaporates into water vapor, condenses to form clouds, and precipitates back to earth in the form of rain and snow |
