Matter

| Atom | A particle that is the smallest and most basic part of an element. |
| Atomic Theory | The idea that everything is made of small particles called atoms. |
| Compound | A matter made of two or more elements, such as water, oxygen or salt. |
| Molecule | The smallest particle of a compound that is made out of atoms. |
| Temperature | The measure of how hot or cold something is. |
| Mass | The amount of matter an object has. |
| Volume | The amount of space an object takes up. |
| Solid | Matter with a definite shape and volume that is made of vibrating particles. |
| Physical Change | A change in traits- such as color, size and shape- that does not change what the substance is made of. |
| Chemical Change | The process where one or more kinds of matter changes into one or more different kinds of matter. |
| Chemical Reaction | A change where one or more substances are turned into one or more different substances, usually caused by heat or mixing new substances. |
| Conservation of Matter | The scientific law that matter cannot be made or destroyed, only transferred and changed. |
| Liquid | Matter with a definite mass but no definite volume where particles easily slide around each other. |
| Gas | A form of matter that does not have definite shape or volume. |
| Solution | a mixture in which substances are spread out evenly and do not settle in the bottom of the container. |
| Mixture | Different materials are placed together, but each material in the mixture keeps its own properties. |
