| What is おじょうがつ? | New Year is one of the most important celebrations which people often travel home to spend with their families. They visit local shrines to pray for health and send New Year’s cards. They also eat rice cakes. |
| When does おじょうがつ take place? | Around January 1st to January 3rd (一月一日~一月三日). |
| What is Golden Week? | A week made up of 4 public holidays that takes place around late April to early May. This is one of the only weeks Japanese people take time off work. |
| What is おぼん? | A Buddhist festival celebrating the return of the souls of one's ancestors. Lanterns welcome ancestors back to the house and people celebrate with folk dancing and fireworks. |
| What are おみこし? | Portable shrines carried around the town by members of the community. They are used during あきまつり (Autumn Festival). |
| What is 七五三? | A festival for 5 year old boys and 3 and 7 year old girls. It is believed that children of these ages are prone to bad luck. Children are dressed in きもの and taken to visit local shrines to pray for good health. |
