| How do historians understand what life was like for people in ancient Japan? | Historians use ancient and historical texts while archeologists use physical features (e.g., ruins, tools, fossils). |
| How does Japan's history compare to that of other countries? | There were tribes of hunters and gatherers that eventually adopted farming techniques and the domestication of animals. Non-kin relationships develop, specializations form, creation myths form, codes of laws form, technology improves, and so on. |
| How did the clans work? | Various areas of Japan developed into clans of wealthy and powerful groups (usually families) that demanded taxation (money and/or food) in exchange for their protection. |
| What clan took control during the Heian period? | The Minamoto clan took control of the capital (Kyoto) and developed many cultural practices unique to Japan. |
| What is the name and author of the first novel ever written? | The Tale of Genji written by a woman named Murasaki Shikubu. |

| What was Sengoku Jidai? | The Warring States Period, took place in the 1500s which saw various clans fighting for military domination. Many clan leaders hoped to take control of the country and become Shogun, the head general, and start a bakufu, a military government. |
| What was the policy of sakoku? | Enacted by the bakufu, a strict policy to the way that Japanese dealt with foreigners, effectively closing Japan off from the rest of the world. |
| How did Japan connect with the rest of the world during sakoku? | One port in Kyushu remained open from which non-Japanese ideas, mostly from Europe and Asia, entered the country and gradually began to take hold, including guns and philosophy. |
| What event put an end to sakoku? | American ships entered Yokohama harbour in the mid 19th century demanding that Japan open its borders to trade. Upon noticing the great difference in technology from Western powers, a great shift in attitude in dealing with the outside world developed. |
| What was the Meji resoration? | A time of great modernization where Japan adopted and acculturated many ideas from other countries in an effort to modernize and “catch up” with other nations’ technological and sociological developments. |
| What has happened to Japan's economy since the end of the war? | Japan’s economy exploded in the post-war years. The “bubble” burst in 1992 and Japan entered an economic recession. Even though Japan’s economy remains strong, it leads the world in debt. |
