Cells the smallest unit that can live on its own and that makes up all living organisms and the tissues of the body
Eukaryotes any cell or organism that possesses a clearly defined nucleus and membrane-bound organelles
Eukaryotic relating to a cell or organism that has a clearly defined nucleus and other membrane-bound organelles within it
Organelles a subcellular structure that has one or more specific jobs to perform in the cell
Cell Wall a rigid, protective layer that surrounds certain types of cells, like plant cells, providing structural support and protection, essentially acting like a tough outer shell for the cell
Cell Membrane a thin, semipermeable barrier that surrounds and protects a cell
Nucleus the structure in a cell that contains the chromosomes and is the control center or "brain" of the cell
Cytoplasm the gelatinous liquid that fills the inside of a cell
Mitochondria membrane-bound cell organelles (mitochondrion, singular) that generate most of the chemical energy needed to power the cell's biochemical reactions.
Vacuoles a membrane-bound space or cavity within a cell that stores fluid, food, or waste
Chloroplasts an organelle within the cells of plants and certain algae that is the site of photosynthesis
Chlorophyll a pigment that gives plants their green color, and it helps plants create their own food through photosynthesis.
Photosynthesis the process where plants use sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide to create their own food (sugar) and release oxygen as a byproduct
Ribosomes the cellular machinery responsible for making proteins
